The reason why a garden hose is so important is that you cannot have a garden without the garden hose. Show me a well kept garden and I will show a well maintained garden hose.
If you would like to avoid the frustrations of a garden hose reel that is leaking, tangled or cracked, it will help to have an idea on how to maintain one.
How do you maintain your garden hose for posterity?
This is an important question and especially when you imagine some of the things likely to happen if you don’t maintain it. These include:
- Flattened by a mower
- Rotting from contact with soil moisture
Apart from the above, the garden hose reel can also become a hazard as one might trip on them and fall. Turning the crank the right way makes a whole lot of a difference. The next thing you will be required to know is how to store them. A hose hanger is one effective way to store it.
Before storing the garden hose….
Once you are done with watering the garden, the hose will be left with some water inside. The water should simply be drained away and if there are any attachments, you should remove them in readiness for the long winter coming.
Expansion and contraction
Both ends of the hose will tend to expand and contract with the thawing and freezing of the water. Be vigilant as this will only serve to weaken the hose’s fabric.
This occurs where there is leaking. A lot of water will go to waste in your garden if you don’t a get a replacement for the washer. This is a precautionary measure and as we say, better be safe than sorry.
Do you know how to coil the garden hose?
Not many garden owners know just how to coil the hose. Yet this is a skill that can be learned and save you from so much trouble. The following are the simple steps to follow;
Turn off water
Before you begin the coil, the water should be turned off so that none is trapped inside. You would also want to avoid the messy spilling of water.
The hose should then be placed some meters off the spigot. The next thing would be to bend to form a loop of around 3 feet inside the hose.
From this point, you can continue making these loops whilst making moving further away from the spigot. All this time, ensure that you are still holding the hose in one firm position. The loops follow each other in quick succession such that the second lies on top of the first one.
In no time, the whole hose will now be stacked ready for storage. If you miss even one single step, you unfortunately have to start all over again. One point worth remembering is that the hose is just as important as the other gardening tools. If you mishandle it, it will not last long.
Now that you have managed to coil it, the next important bit is the storage. It is not enough to just put the hose way till the winter is over. There must be a designated place to store it.
Having turned the crank and winded it away, have a hanger ready where you will store it. By the way, you can also use the hose pot if you want to make things practical, beautiful and safe.
You might have not heard about them but they are considered some of the most practical ways to store away your hose safely for the next season.
Some of the things that you will learn about them include the fact that:
- They tend to hold to one part of the house
- They will hold to the garage
- Spread hose weight equally hence no kinking
- Are shielded away from the sun
You will realize that though the traditional way of storing the hose is to hang it on a nail, there is this better way of using hanger to maximize safety.
The maintenance you provide for the hose will make it durable for use in gardening.
